The Workhouse, Caernarvon Road, Bangor

Please could you help me I would like to know if there was an address number for the workhouse in Caernarvon Road, my great grandmother lived at 292 Caernarvon Road, she was unmarried and had three young children , her name was Evelyn Daisy Richardson, after Caernarvon Road she moved to 55 Dean Street, Bangor.

I don't think that the Workhouse ever had an address number.  If you look at Slater's Directory 1895 on this website (go to Tools & Features/ Historical Sources/ Directories) you will see that Carnarvon Road is numbered but the only two establishments between nos. 253 and 363, Glanadda Board School and the Workhouse, are not numbered.

After the closure of the Workhouse, the buildings became  the Snowdon Dairy, but this was demolished in the 1960s (?).  A new building was put up on the site - a Kwik Save store - it's now the Home Bargain store, 287 Caernarfon Road (note modern spelling of Caernarfon).

That side of the road are 'odd' numbers, you're in the right section of Caernarfon Road though

292 appears to have sold in 11 Dec 2008 for £35,000 making me think it is the derelict house(s) near the St Davids Park Roadabout, or the predecessing building at that point?

Perhaps I should have mentioned in my earlier post that the houses on the north side of Caernarfon Road have even numbers and No. 292 is directly opposite the site of the Workhouse.  If you go to Google Maps, enter 292 Caernarfon Road, then click on 'Street  View', you will see that it's a neat little terraced house.

Thank you for the information regarding 292 Caernarvon Road,  looking into my family history has shown me how hard it was for families moving with the railway and relocating to Bangor, so glad that my great grandmother did not live at the workhouse.  Very much appreciate all the information given.  Linda Kelman

The records of the Bangor and Beaumaris Poor Law Union are held at Anglesey Archives, Llangefni.  They include records of of the Bangor Workhouse.
