St Davids Hospital

I was born at St David's hospital on 18 January 1959. I often wonder if I was mistaken for another baby and taken by the wrong mother as I am so unlike the rest of my family. Does anyone know if I could locate hospital records from so long ago? Thanks Linda PS I am an opera singer, no-one else in my family is musical

My heart jumped when i saw this site . I had allot of fun in St Davids Hospital. I was born there and had my 2 eldest kids there too. With complications during pregnancy, with both my kids, i had to stay in a few weeks before giving birth. There was a 6 berth ward right at the end of maternaty ward and it was full during this occassion with myself and 5 other women whom also spent a few weeks there too...we used to have some fun if only the nurses knew what we were up to half of the time ..think they would of thrown us out!!!lol...

I remeber once it was a hot night and the window was right on top of my bed..and had old sash windows there that wouldnt stay open..soooo i decide to put a full can off coke in the gap to keep the window open a little...anyway during the night we got woke up by a car alarm going...everybody fell back to sleep..morning came and a nurse came in and saying that someone had thrown a can of coke threw at a doctors car window last night!!! everybody looked at me and started laughing...i put my head down in shame...and the nurse took one look at me and said . Sheena did you have trouble with your window last night...i said yes!!!!...she just said sssshhhhhhh!!! and noded..poor doctor..'sorry doctor whome ever you were it was not delibarate'....we had some fun there i must say ...

I also was sneeking out at night in a taxi to get pizzas from upper bangor for the girls..which i wasn't suppose to obviously!!! ..but made a good profit for my deeds...lol..i could go on and on!!! my third child was born in ysbyty gwynedd in 1995 and did i feel the difference i hated it to be honest...everybody was different ..and the place was not sooo homely...but will always hold a fond memeory for me .xx

Wow what a fabulous video, I worked there from soon after I qualified as a midwife until it closed down...just 5 days after the date of the video. My children were born there too.

I was in the 'closing team' and remember breaking my heart as we finally left at about 5 pm and the workmen were boarding the windows up as we drove away leaving it with the sun shining gloriously on the redbricks making it look on fire against the blue sky that was behind it that day.

I have sat tearfully through the film several times now, remembering so much.

It was nice to see Danny on the switchboard, what a shame we didn't see more faces...

There were the midwives tables in the canteen just in front of the servery, that no one else was ever allowed to sit on even though there was a leak in the roof over that table for the whole time I worked there. I could go on for ages, but I'm running out of tissues.

If anyone is interested some more of the oder history of St Davids then I recommend a look at the following website.

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Wales/

Ps - does anyone know if there are still bricks for sale following the demolision?

for 'live' records defer to the NHS guidance below:

If you want to view your health records, you may not need to make a formal application. Nothing in the law prevents healthcare professionals from informally showing you your own records. You can make an informal request during a consultation, or by phoning your GP surgery or hospital to arrange a time to see your records.
Formal requests under the Data Protection Act

Under the Data Protection Act 1998, you have a legal right to apply for access to health information held about you. This includes your NHS or private health records held by a GP, optician or dentist, or by a hospital.

A health record contains information about your mental and physical health recorded by a healthcare professional as part of your care.

If you want to see your health records, you don't have to give a reason.
Applying for access to your health records

Depending on which health records you want to see, submit your request in writing or by email to:
your GP surgery
your optician
your dentist, or
the health records manager or patient services manager at your local hospital trust

This is known as a Subject Access Request (SAR).

It's a good idea to state the dates of the records when you apply.

The health records manager, GP or other healthcare professional will decide whether your request can be approved. They can refuse your request if, for example, they believe that releasing the information may cause serious harm to your physical or mental health or that of another person.

Under the Data Protection Act, requests for access to records should be met within 40 days. However, government guidance for healthcare organisations says they should aim to respond within 21 days.
Fees to access your health records

You may have to pay a fee to access your health records so ask if there is a charge before you apply to see them.

For more information, see What are the fees for accessing medical records (health records)?
Can someone else access my health records?

Another person can only access your health records if you authorise them to do so. For more information, see Can I access someone else’s health records?

Formal adoption, as we now know it, did not exist in England and Wales until 1927. Before then, adoptions were usually informal. In a few cases there was some legal documentation, but no central register.

There are a few useful links below...

The birth certificate of the person might also offer up clues.

Re: St Davids Hospital

Caroline Larman

Subject: Hospital Fire

Message: I nursed in the operating theatre and was caught in the middle of the fire that started in the exray department. We were operating on a patient with a Hernia at the time. We heard the fire alarm and thought it was a practise but then we saw smoke coming underneath the door. The surgeon worked on and got the patient to safety but myself and two other nurses we left in the anesthetic room. We shared the oxygen between us to help us breathe. I remember looking out the window at the building opposite and seeing people watching the fire brigade get the patient off the theatre roof. One ohe nurse was crying. Eventually a fireman led us out of the building we could not see a thing due to the smoke. He just seemed to appear and we heard his breathing . I suffered from smoke inhalation . There was no fire escape. My father told me afterwards that a friend of his who was in the fire brigade rang him to tell him the hospital was on fire in ex ray. My father replied that I would be okay because I was in theatre. He was quite shocked to learn that I was in the middle of it.

Thank you for posting this amazing video. Is it possible to buy a copy of this for download/on CD? The reason is - I had a baby there in 1991 who died in the SCBU. I have no pictures of the hospital itself. I then studied on the site at the old nursing school for a year and a half before the school moved to the new site in Bangor uni. I am currently writing a memoir which includes that time and having access to this video is great - but for personal reasons I would like to be able to keep a copy somehow.
