Slum Dwelling (Dean & Hirael)

This post was updated on .
A lack of building control and planning allowed for the establishment of high density buildings poorly serviced in the Hirael and Dean areas. Satitation and health problems ensued. The areas were cleared of the worst offenders and areas re-aligned with new roads and new schemes for social housing which saw large changes to the areas in the late 1920s-late 1930s.

In Hirael the terrace rows were built between 1819 and 1827 on land leased by John Warren,
Dean of Bangor. Speculators erected 225 tightly packed dwellings on 6.5 acres which is 35
per acre. Some of the streets such as Hugh Street were only 8 feet wide.
