Background
The Bangor & Beaumaris Poor Law Union was created on 30 May 1837 and comprised the parishes and townships of: Aber, Bangor, Llandegai, Llanfairfechan, Llanllechid, Beaumaris, Llanddaniel Fab, Llandegfan, Llandonna, Llandysilio, Llanedwen, Llanfaes, Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll, Llanffinan, Llanfihangel Esceifiog, Llanfihangel Tyn Sylwy, Llangoed, Llaniestyn, Llansadwrn, Penmon, Penmynydd.  The resulting Workhouse was opened in 1845 on the Caernarfon Road at Glanadda, Bangor on land known as Cae Maes Idan, Prior to which stood individual dwellings noted a 'poor houses'.  1913 saw the erection of a new improved building, all be it short lived as a Poor Law Infirmary, envisaged to replace the original however the building was quickly commandeered as a Red Cross Hospital for soldiers during WWI, later still becoming a maternity and children's hospital and from 1938-2004 known as 'St David's' Hospital. The Union therefore remained at the Cae Maes Idan site until 1929 when the building was decommissioned and sold to The Bangor Ice Co.
