Seion Chapel

Site Description Chapel built 1855, founded 1857 & rebuilt/modified 1861 & 1878-9. Built in the Gothic style, gable-entry type. Status (1996): in chapel use. Date of present building 1878-9.

The chapel was founded in 1879 by followers of John Wesley (1703 - 1791), an anglican cleric who founded "methodism". Seion was therefore designated a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. However, to Hirael residents it would always be referred to as "Capel Wesla"! Seion was not the only methodist chapel in Hirael. There was also Salem, located on William Street. Salem was a Calvinistic Methodist Chapel (founded by followers of John Calvin (1509 - 1564) who was a French theologian. Both Seion and Salem have now been converted into flats.
