The building of the Safeway store began in August 1986 with the clearance of the 130 year old Caernarfonshire and Anglesey hospital.
The store built in brick and stone and roofed in slate was designed with 300 car parking spaces by PDA Architectural Partnership Manchester and built by Eric Wright Construction Ltd, the consultant engineers were Shepard Gilmour Partnership of Manchester and Bangor.
It opened to the public in October 1987
Safeway was acquired by Morrisons in March 2004 when the store was rebranded.
