Jones P.E. Thesis on Hirael

Anyone got any ideas how I can see this PHD thesis on "Bangor - A Study in Urban Morphology and Social Change" ?   It seems it might be of help in my own work.  As usual, any help gratefully received.

Re: Jones P.E. Thesis on Hirael

It's... Bangor: A Study in Urban Morphology and Social Geography, 1800-1971 by Peter Ellis Jones and it was his Ph.D Thesis (1973-1976) and one of the most important pieces of work done in print documenting the City.

It is actually an Aberystwyth Thesis and I applied to them to get my own copy - as it is typewriter typed rather than digital this was £150+ of binding and manual photocopying! (not including the folio!)

Thankfully for the masses Bangor University have a copy

As do Gwynedd libraries, I can't find it at the moment... but I have seen it in the local history / reference section of the Bangor public library.

Might be really good for your shop research there is quite a bit of analysis of the high street and research into shops over the years.

Thanks for that Matt - can it be accessed online for a read, or does it mean a University Library visit ?

Re: Jones P.E. Thesis on Hirael

It'll be a physical library visit, a rewarding one though if only to get a feel for what the thesis contains. I don't think it's been digitized at all. Given the time, resources and permissions this is something which should be made more widely available, but as it stands remains an excellent resource behind the scenes for researchers and is refereed to by agencies like CADW.

Re: Jones P.E. Thesis on Hirael

Thanks Matt.  Am I correct in thinking it would be in the old Central School building on Deiniol Road ?  And if so, can I just walk in to take a look ?  It will indeed help confirm my own researches and hopefully add to them.

I generally used the copy in Bangor Public Library, Ffordd Gwynedd.  It's in the Store, so you have to ask at the desk and the librarian will bring it out of a back room.  It must be over five years since I needed to use it, and strangely it's not on the Library Online Catalogue, so is it still there?

Re: Jones P.E. Thesis on Hirael

I don't know about the general library, I attended the Archive at the University this morning - no students or lecturers so I had the room and thesis to myself - looks like i will be living there for a good few hours/days.  The very large supporting maps really make it a joy to study.  Thanks to all for pointing me in the right direction.  My own work is suddenly up to 200 pages, now I fear it might become 400 in no time. :)

Re: Jones P.E. Thesis on Hirael

Hi Matt, my researched is pretty much finished, I'm just checking photos to make sure I've covered everything.   It's quite a "tome" now !!!
My problem now is I used Word to type it out and I have no idea how to get it into book form for printing as the current 400+ pages of single sheet are unmanageable lol.
Prior to lockdown, many shops in High Street were fascinated in their history and asked for the info to read - that was rather nice.
Now with the upper part cordoned off I need to photograph everything up there again before demolition begins - 2 fascinating buildings are about to disappear but the foundations will be well worth looking at, as will be the hole when they dig up the roadway from the Cathedral to Lon Pobty.
I think I might have extra appendices for that !!

Re: Jones P.E. Thesis on Hirael

The Society can have a free copy for the "archive" once I get the format/printing issue sorted.
Sadly my knowledge of Office is superficial so I am having to spend time researching how to format the document - a teenager would know but I don’t lol
