Previously recorded as Bryn Dinas. Resident Charles Pierce (aged 48 in) 1871 and wife Margaret. In the census he is recorded as a ship owner. 10 years earlier, 1861, at the age of 38 he was recorded at the Royal Hotel, Market Street, Bangor (a visitor and Merchant). By 1881 he had moved to Bryn Y Mor Bangor. Originally coming from Anglesey, the 1851 census shows him at 28yo in LLANGEFNI as a shopkeeper. Not known if he built 'Haulfre'. John had been living on Holyhead Road and was a Chemist by trade. He shows as the Head in 1901 and 1911 Census. Transfered into UCNWB ownership as halls of residence. c1942 - Student residence accommodating 21 male students as an annex to Reichel, where they used the catering and other communal facilities. 1966 - residence of University Lecturer John Hywel who on that date deed-poll changed his name from John Griffith Hywel Jones. In the late 1990s it was sold by the University to private real-estate/letting agents Acebarn Ltd, who made alterations (C99A/0218/11/LL) to form accommodation for 12 students. |
J.E. Griffith of Bryn Dinas [Haulfre] is best remembered as a genealogist and antiquary. In 1914 he published his magisterial Pedigrees of Caernarvonshire and Anglesey Families which contains the family trees of scores of local families, the result of years of meticulous research. He also published the Flora of Anglesey and Caernarvonshire (1894) and a Portfolio of Photographs of Cromlechs (1900). He was an accomplished wood-carver and a knowlegable astronomer (fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society). He died in 1933 and was buried at Glanadda cemetery. See the Dictionary of Welsh Biography.
