Glyn-orwic and Capel Berea. Caernarfon Road

This post was updated on .
In 1941 I lived with my family in a house or rectory called Glyn-orwic. Caernarfon Road Bangor, and opposite Glannadda School, that I attended, I have been told they were both demollished about 15 years ago to make way for a roundabout, the number could have been 272-274 or near, I have a photograph sent to me by Mr Tony Owen, Estate Agent, showing a house and Chapel taken around 1995, it was for sale then as a six bedroom, but we think ours was a 3, it could have been built on, is there a chance I that a search

By this time road traffic has become more important and the St Davids Hospital is well established as a specialist maternity unit. The access road was improved resulting in the loss of the building north of yours.

Unlike earlier maps which just show this as one (6 bed) dwelling, there is a clear line indicating it is a semi-detached house and the maps here further show what appears as a side access extension to the semi nearest the chapel. Perhaps around the war years it was decided to convert it to accommodate 2 families, (2, 3 bed properties) all be it it was being sold again as a 6 bedroom house again before being demolished.

A porter from the hospital records a video of the hospital in 1994 prior to its closure. Around 1 minute in, there is footage of the house and chapel.: http://www.bangorcivicsociety.org.uk/pages/hisso/v_stdavids.htm

1995 the chapel, 274-272 and other dwellings are demolished as the hospital site is converted to retail units (St Davids Retail Park) and the area altered to accommodate a roundabout.

Many many thanks for your great search for me and it is
spot on with my memory in 1941, and as our parents have passed on my
sister  who was 16 at that time and me 10, was in doubt about the
house being too big ie. 6 bedrooms, but now we agree  we had access to
our part through the porch on the left side namely Glyn-orwic. we
lived there from March till October 1941 to escape the bombing on the
south coast, my father was a diamond pollisher working for A
Monnicandam in a small workshop at 256 high st. Bangor. I attended
Glannadda school for most of the time but I found the language very
hard to learn, the reason we came back early was the news that my
brother  who was a Flight Seargant flying in a Wellington Bomber was
shot down in Germany  at just 19, and was a sad time for us, well
again I thank you and Tony so much for your time and efforts and wish
you all the best, for the future, Robert Laing.

Berea Methodist Chapel cause was built in 1860 and then rebuilt in 1881 and 1907. The 1907 chapel was built in the Classical style with a gable-entry plan, vestry and schoolroom, but was demolished in 2003 when the congregation moved to a new site nearby
