Hi there. I’m researching Amilius Clark who had a photographic studio at 2 Bulkeley Place Bangor (102 / 106 high street) from 1880 to about the 1920’s. This is where the N&F shop stood up until recently I believe. I’ve seen a photograph/postcard of what is now Wetherspoons with the opening of the square on the other side of the road with what looks like an advertisement stand. On the 1914 map of Bangor there is a large building to the back of the square marked Laundry, and I know he shared premises with a butcher, wool shop and coach builder. http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2056906110038257023XxqPqZ I’m really interested to see what other information anyone has about Bulkeley Place especially if there are any photographs of the studio building. |
Oh dear, what a gaff.
Looking again at the map it seems that Bulkeley Place is not where i thought it was. Have the buildings changed numbers? |

There is an old advert for Clarke at 2 Bulkeley Place here...

Somewhat odd Clark had 3 '2 Bulkeley Place' offices (Bangor, Bethesda and Caernarfon)
CLARK A & Son 2 Bulkeley Pl, High St, Bangor and Bethesda 1880, 1883 --- listed under artists not photographers in 1880 and 1883 CLARK Amilius 2 Bulkeley Place, High St, Carnarvon 1895 Dates refer to trade directories |

http://www.bangorcivicsociety.org.uk/pages/hisso/slaters1895/sc9.htm The above Slaters Directory 1895 is listed by building name / road (oddly) useful here as it refers the reader to 102 High Street The modern list of shop numbers is here: http://www.bangorcivicsociety.org.uk/pages/towntour/premises.htm This shows a business at 102 recently as Bulkeley Dental Practice... is it the building next door to N&F perhaps it? (the dentist -102- was in the non-descript 'shop' with brown tiles after N&F... http://www.bangorcivicsociety.org.uk/pages/towntours/11.htm The 1834 Map (Wood) Shows what could be an N&F gap here anyway... |
Thank you so much for all this info.
It's all for my brother who is a collodion artist. We did have a look around Bangor. I'm glad it's not where N&F was!! |
Glad to help. Thought you might like this...
..If it's not where N&F was it is absolutely the building directly to the right. |

Looking at it again there is a 'Bulkeley Place' sign on the building... but it goes by High Street number only these days... Batty's Chip Shop 108 High Street, Bangor, Gwynedd, LL57 1NS Snowdon Books 106 High Street, Bangor, Gwynedd County LL57 1NS Pritchard & Co 104 High Street, Bangor, LL57 1NS Bulkeley Dental Practice 102 High Street, Bangor LL57 1NS |
N&F was, 110-114 High Street Bangor, Gwynedd LL57 1NS
...so according to the directory/cutting above would have been the location of the Red Lion Pub and Wm. Jones Plumber. |
Other tennants of Bulkeley Place

There is an article on 'Amilius Clarke and Son, Photographers, Bangor and Bethesda' by Pam Owen of Abergele - a grand-daughter of Amilius. It's in 'Gwreiddiau Gwynedd Roots', No. 53, Autumn/Winter 2007.
It's a fascinating account of how the Paris-born Amilius Clarke, the son of Sir John Clarke of Tipperary, Ireland, established his photographic business and brought up his family in Bangor. |
