Anyone got any ideas how I can see this PHD thesis on "Bangor - A Study in Urban Morphology and Social Change" ? It seems it might be of help in my own work. As usual, any help gratefully received.

The photographer was C. Richard of High Street, Bangor and written underneath the photograph is, ‘‘Penrallt, The Property of Lord Penrhyn with the respectful compliments of the Tenants”. (Penrhyn Castle Papers at the University Archives)

The Penrallt Estate had been 200 acres in size, originally part of the Penrhyn Estate. It past to Martha Griffith (1681-1705) an heiress and illegitimate member of the family. Her sons second wife Hephzibah Howard (of Conway) died aged 92 in 1832 resulting in the breakup of the estate into building plots.

The Penrallt Estate land was auctioned off in 1833, it had extended from Garth in an arc to the (now) railway station and included the northern "Aethwy" ridge of the valley. Forming large sections of what is now Garth and Upper Bangor. John Wood's 1834 map notes "This Land to be disposed of for building" across the Garth area, the first to be developed. Soon after developments came on Holyhead Road (already laid down by Telford in 1817) and then the establishment of College Road linking Garth and Upper Bangor. Lord Penrhyn took ownership of the house again which was let, it's final resident being Principal Sir Harry Reichel who relocated to Gartherwen nearby.

Lord Penrhyn sold the house and land to the City Council and in 1904 together with lands belonging to the bishop it was donated to the University College of North Wales, Bangor for the building of the "Main Arts".

History of Maesgeirchen

Maesgeirchen is situated on the outskirts of the City of Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales, UK. It is noted as the 3rd biggest housing estate in North Wales and has in the region of 4000 people living here. There are approx 1000 dwellings on the estate with approx 220 of those being owner/occupier.

Maesgeirchen was originally conceived out of an idea to take up the overspill of Bangor before the outbreak of World War 2. It was the council's re-development programme to rehouse families from condemned and overcrowded properties in the town. Ffordd Castell was among the first streets finished in December 1937; shortly after, the first tenants moved in.

A total of 304 houses were built on the estate before the outbreak of the 2nd World War with a further 274 houses and flats being built, plus 234 at Tan-y-Bryn after the war. The houses were constructed at an average cost of £390.00 each and tenants were charged a rent of 7s.6p a week.

Maesgeirchen did not escape untouched during World War 2. On the evening of Friday October 24th 1941 at 8.38 the drone of enemy aircraft was heard overhead. Minutes later two stray parachute mines landed at each end of Maesgerchen - one at the top of the hill leading to Penrhyn Ave the other on the old road at Lon-y-Felin, near the 15th green of the golf course. Emergency services arrived to find a 26ft crater (diameter) and 10ft deep; one house was completely demolished (No.1 Penrhyn Ave); 29 severely damaged and another 190 slightly damaged. Three people were killed - Jack Lewis, a Post Office engineer and former Bangor City footballer who had rushed outside on hearing a loud noise only to receive the full blast of the bomb; Mrs Ann Roberts who was staying with her daughter at No.1 Penrhyn Ave; and Charles Walters, a BBC chauffeur who was driving up the hill and who, ironically, had been evacuated to Bangor with his employers in order to escape the Bristol bombing. Fourteen injured people were taken to the C & A infirmary, 11 of whom were detained, being in a serious condition.

Seventy people were rendered homeless, furniture that could be salvaged was stored in the old Woolworth building at 297 High St, Bangor and schoolrooms at Horeb Chapel, Hirael. Accommodation was found for the 70 homeless and meals were provided for them at Robert's Cafe at weekends and on subsequent days emergency feeding arrangements were made by the WVS. The victims of the bombing were treated badly by the authorities; the amount of compensation was a disgrace. Mrs Lewis having lost her husband and possessions received a paltry £42 damages from the War Damages Commission

It was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1929 by which time it had 400 stores, factories and mills. Montague Burton was knighted in 1931 for his efforts in "furthering industrial relations and international peace." He was appointed Justice of the Peace, a post he held for many years

After World War II Montague Burton offered men the chance to buy a full suit, which included jacket, trousers, waistcoat, shirt and underwear and became known as 'The Full Monty'. In 1946 the Company acquired the Peter Robinson women's fashion chain. By 1952, the year of Montague Burton's death, the Company was the largest multiple tailor in the world.

Burton was the official sponsor for the World Cup in 1966 and again in 2002. In 1998 the Company changed its name to Arcadia Group.

Hi,

I'm a student researching the Jewish history of Bangor and the area. I've put together a fairly comprehensive picture of the families who owned shops and lived here- obviously with particular emphasis on the Wartski and Pollecoff families whom so many people have memories of- and am now looking for local memories of anything relating to the Jewish community in Bangor and beyond.

If you are from Bangor, and you have memories of these families or their shops in the High Street I would love to hear your recollections. I am also interested in people who remember Bangor as it was in its heyday, or who might have some family lore they'd be willing to share.

I can be contacted here or by email krasejc (at) gmail (dot) com.

Would anyone by chance have a copy of this comprehensive report ?

I have come across just one page of it with an exceptional description of the poor housing in various parts of the city. This report was no doubt part of the 1930's clearance scheme of the "workers housing" ( sic) which the Council then put into action.

Many thanks for any assistance.

Okay in this topic I am trying to list all, or most of, the roads in Bangor for a quick explanation as to the reason they are called what they are.

Farrar Road was developed around 1896 on land owned by William Farrar Roberts. He lived at Llwyn Eithin (now Hillgrove School), Ffriddoedd Road. He was a member of the city council.

Glynne Road was named so after Dr (of Law) Geoffrey Glynne who bequeathed in his will in 1557, to his brother William Glynne (Bishop of Bangor) and his friend Maurice Griffith (Bishop of Rochester) the old Bangor Friary land, plus land and assets elsewhere for 'the use of a Grammar School to be ever maintained in the said town of Bangor for the better education and bringing up of poor mens children'

Friars Road refers therefore in name to both Friars School and the Bangor Friary which preceded it. The Friary established by the Dominican Order, or Black Friars, in the 13th century, which was wound up in 1538 following the dissolution of the monasteries and the purchase of the land by Geoffrey Glynne.

Maes Isalaw refers to John Richards, better known by his bardic name Isalaw. He was born in a house called King's Head in Hirael, Bangor. He was educated at the British School in the Garth area of Bangor, Caernarfonshire and then went to Shoreland Road school, Birmingham, England for two years where his interest in music began under Mr Andrew Deakin, organist. John Richards wrote immaculately and assisted a number of composers in transcribing and correcting their work. He also wrote a number of articles on music in various journals. He was a prolific composer and published Caneuon Isalaw. Much of his work appears in the hymn books of various denominations. "Isalaw " died on 15 September 1901.

Totton Road refers to William Church Totton who was appointed Headmaster of Friars School 1838 and remained in post until his death in 1867, during this period the school experienced a long period of decline. The school closed in 1867 after Totton’s death and reopened in 1873 with a new headmaster Daniel Lloyd Williams who restored the school to its former glory.

Ambrose Street Emrys William Ambrose (1813-1873) was an Independent minister, poet, and littérateur . He was born 1 Aug. 1813 in the Penrhyn Arms Inn (which later became the first home of the University College of North Wales ) and lived there from 1813 until 1823. Emrys 's father was one of the earliest members of the Baptist congregation at Bangor . He was educated first at Friars School. He was a very notable personality in the Independent denomination , especially in North Wales , where he founded several churches — in particular, those of Penrhyndeudraeth , Penmorfa , Criccieth , and Beddgelert . He was also for many years the North Wales representative of the Bible Society and this brought him into close contact with other churches. He also competed in the eisteddfodau at an early age and won numerous prizes. Emrys was his bardic name, his father was the Inn Keeper of the Penrhyn Arms and went on to live at a property called Fair View off Ambrose Street in Hirael.

Tan Y Fynwent 'Fynwent' is 'Cemetery' in Welsh probably referring to the Garden of Rest and earlier burial locations nearby the location.

Glanrafon & Glanrafon Hill Glan Rafon is 'Riverside' in Welsh referring to the road leading to and from the River Adda which runs through Bangor which is now Culverted.

Deiniol Road refers to Saint Deiniol (died 584) who was the first Bishop of Bangor. In English this would be Daniel Road, but the English translation is never used. The road was laid and opened 1904-1905

Sackville Road refers to William Edward Sackville-West (1830-1905), who was a lieutenant colonel in the grenadier guards and a prominent citizen in Bangor, north Wales towards the end of the nineteenth century. He was involved with the University College of North Wales, founded in 1884, in the promotion of Bangor as a site for the college and in the early years after its establishment. He also acted as agent for the Penrhyn estate, Bangor.

Seiriol Road Seiriol is 'Puffin' in Welsh referring to the view out towards Puffin Island a 69 acres uninhabited island owned by the Baron Hill Estate. called so due to the presence of the birds and to Saint Seiriol, who established a monastic settlement on the island and on Penmon Point on the mainland opposite the island in the 6th century.

Orme Road It's not clear what 'Orme' actually means, many believe it's origins to be Viking. The road name though refers to the view of the 'Great Orme' which a prominent limestone headland on the north coast of Wales situated in Llandudno.

Treflan Treflan is Welsh for 'Township'

Kyffin Square refers to the Rev. John Kyffin, Vicar who bought land between the high street and the river adda in 1808, on which Kyffin Place, Kyffin Square and the Kyffin Arms Tavern were erected. Larger buildings were built facing the high street. Prior to this John Jones (Bryncir) had owned the land

Lon Pobty in English would be Oven Lane so reference to baking/bakery.

Ffriddoedd Road Ffriddoedd being ffridd oedd and 'was Meadow' in English

Victoria Road / Victoria Park & Albert Street Royal references to Queen Victoria (24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) of the United Kingdom and her Prince Consort, Albert (26 August 1819 – 14 December 1861) of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha

Belmont Road/Avenue/Drive/Street Refer to the Belmont Estate (referred to as the Bell Mount Estate - John Morgan in the 1840 Census of Land Ownership rented to Edward Case at that time.

Thomas Peers Williams, the grandson of Thomas Williams, the 'Copper King' of Parys Mountain, lived at Craig-y-Don, directly opposite Upper Bangor near Cadnant, Glyn Garth, which is why he called the new road Craig-y-Don Road. Evelyn and Hwfa Roads were named after two of his children. His daughter Margaret married Sir Richard Williams-Bulkley which explains Bulkley Road. Temple Road gets its name from Temple House, the grand mansion that the Copper King built for himself at Great Marlow, Berkshire.
(Thanks David!)

I've had a query from Bangor Cathedral asking about the origins of a processional-cross which was made by a German prisoner-of-war who was a patient in Bangor's Caernarfonshire and Anglesey Hospital probably during the closing years of the Second World War. He was an artist and became an accomplished designer of stained-glass. The cross, which is usually displayed near the Cathedral pulpit, is of simple design, decorated by some coloured glass baubles and has been there since the 1970s. Until a couple of years ago, there was card caption which gave the name of the artist , but the caption has been lost and no-one knows his name.

It is thought that that in later years, he lived near Soest, Westphalia, Bangor's twin city and that the cross was given to the Cathedral when the two towns were twinned in the early 1970s. At the same time, a small stained-glass window was given to the C & A Hospital in Upper Bangor which depicts part of the old hospital. This window is now in a display case in the foyer of Ysbyty Gwynedd (and usually partly hidden by charity posters).

If anyone can provide the name of this German POW and stained-glass artist who was so fond of Bangor, I would be very grateful. I'm afraid that because of my current lack of mobility, I can't provide photos of the cross or window.

This building is causing me some grief on 2 fronts :
1) What was it historically ? ( late 19th & early 20th Century ) As a youngster the 2 old ladies who owned the garage lived here, but given its size and location perhaps it had another function ?
2) The plaque on the front I can find nothing about.

I was born in Bangor in 1944 and left to live in London in 1967. I am currently compiling a family tree and am trying to locate the places where members of my family lived in the Bangor area. Can anyone please tell me of a site from which I can download early maps of Bangor's street layout?

Does anyone have any historical info on the "Green Building" on the corner of Friars Road and the lower part of the high street, opposite Friars Terrace ? It is unusually large and "grand" and seems not to be part of the Friars Road development, perhaps more in tune with Friars Terrace and the grander buildings east of this point. I am aware of the other properties related to Bob Jones and the old laundry, but this corner plot has me baffled. Any assistance gratefully received.

Anyone with ideas on the history of these caves ? I have a feeling they were constructed at the same time as the railway. Despite their proximity to the British Hotel tennis courts, I doubt if they are linked to that.

Now this IS confusing my researches !!!!! It appears "sections" of the high street have been renumbered over time. Early data has number 1 as being opposite the station, with low numbers proceeding as far as Farrar Road - seemingly numbered from rough west to east. Then I find number 1 is at the eastern edge, where the Penrhyn Arms once stood. The 1800's directories therefore become problematic in identifying actual buildings as they appear to use the "old" system. Can anyone help in confirming any link between the "old" numbering sequence compared to the "new" sequence ? As my work involves the historical use of the buildings, I have reached a point where I am no longer able to be 100% accurate in the buildings commercial histories, or indeed their original date of build. The old "Wartski's" building is a good example as I have found 3 different sets of numbers for this building, which before Mr Wartski turned up, the plot was several much smaller businesses. Any help in this confusion would be very gratefully received. No wonder few buildings display their number, even the shop owners cannot be sure about the number they give me ???? It is only the Edwardian/Victorian original doorways that offer a decent clue, but despite what number is shown I have a horrible feeling that even these might be inaccurate. Oh the delights of a high street that has changed so much !!

Theatr Gwynedd was opened in 1975 by the then University College of North Wales (later Bangor University). It was a 344-seat performance space presenting Welsh, English and International theatre as well as concerts, opera, dance, pantomime and children's entertainment. The open end stage functioned with/without proscenium and with/without apron. Raked seating was designed to allow level access to the auditorium for wheelchairs with full front of house facilities. These were enhanced by a gallery for art exhibitions at first floor level. Rectilinear in simple cubic forms, brick faced apart from the fly tower, square openings. Despite local opposition, the theatre closed in November 2008 and was demolished in 2010 to make way for a new performing arts venue, Pontio, which opened in 2015.
