It was interesting to see the link with Bangor Cathedral. Hugh’s younger brother, Thomas Albert Parry followed him into the choir and also became head chorister and soloist. In1937, he was one of the two Bangor boys chosen to sing in the special choir
who sang at the Coronation of George VI at Westminster Abbey. After leaving Friars School, Tom started work with Carter Vincent, Solicitors. He was called up in WW2 but was killed in action serving as Lance Bomber with the Central Mediterranean Forces. His
name is listed in the City of Bangor Memorial at Glanrafon.

Harry Parry was also a chorister, but in the choir of St. Mary’s Church, where he was a soloist. They had a very good choir there in those days. When Harry died in 1956, a memorial service was held at St Mary’s.

It was interesting to see the link with Bangor Cathedral. Hugh’s younger brother, Thomas Albert Parry followed him into the choir and also became head chorister and soloist. In1937, he was one of the two Bangor boys chosen to sing in the special choir who sang at the Coronation of George VI at Westminster Abbey. After leaving Friars School, Tom started work with Carter Vincent, Solicitors. He was called up in WW2 but was killed in action serving as Lance Bomber with the Central Mediterranean Forces. His name is listed in the City of Bangor Memorial at Glanrafon.

Harry Parry was also a chorister, but in the choir of St. Mary’s Church, where he was a soloist. They had a very good choir there in those days. When Harry died in 1956, a memorial service was held at St Mary’s.

Re: Harry Parry (1912-1956) - Wales & Britain's WW2 Jazz Band Leader 22nd April 2020

Just a note to say that I have been encouraged by Rod Holcombe, a retired doctor in Devon to write a definitive account of Owen Henry ("Harry") Parry the Bangor-born Swing Jazz band leader who was compere for the BBC's Radio Rhythm Club, Jazz Club & Housewives' Choice during much of the 1940s.

I am at that stage where I am putting in order much original family material and research findings in order with a view to completing a book in 2012.

I would be grateful for any memories of Harry from North Walians during the critical 1922-1932 period when he practiced at home in Caellepa, at the Caeleppa Chapel and on Bangor Mountain. Any memories of his time in the Bangor Municipal Band (played from 10 years old) and his time with the Harold Dobbs Band in Caernarfon would be appreciated as would memories of his visits to Bangor and radio broadcasts on the BBC Radio's "Radio Rhythm Club", "Jazz Club", "Housewives Choice" or "Crackerjack" where he was briefly as the resident band.

My email is mikestayler@hotmail.com and I can be texted on 0794 054 7926.

With thanks....Diolch

I've looked at all the old photos I have of the area but can't find any pictures or postcards of the right age which show it.

I'm tempted to say water feature given the surrounding stone work and detailing

The other options I guess is that it's been cut to the base, so a lamppost or stench pipe.

There are two each side of the crossing. I was wondering if they had any significance? Boundary markers? Something to do with the crossing? Or simply markings for something under the pavement?

Architecture

Beginning in 1923, Burton began to acquire freehold sites in order to build its own custom designed stores.[7] Prominent town centre corner sites were preferred and the shops often moved a few doors along the same street in order to acquire the corner site. Leeds-based architect Harry Wilson was hired at this time and developed the Burton "house style" building design. In 1931 Burton took over Wilson's practice to make it the in-house architecture department.[8]Wilson was replaced as chief architect by Nathaniel Martin in 1937. [7]

This Burton in-house architecture was Art Deco in style. Individual stores vary from the more restrained red-brick with neoclassical scroll headed columns to fully fledged Art Deco with glazed white faience tile, geometric patterns and stylised elephant heads. However, there are also many standard elements such as a wide polished black granite band above the shop windows for signage, metal vent grates bearing the company logo, billiard halls on the upper levels, window lights showing the locations of other Burton stores, and mosaic titles – sometimes including the company logo – in the doorways.

At ground level, foundation stones were often placed by Montague Burton's four children, Barbara, Stanley, Arnold and Raymond. Each store might have one or several foundation stones, each bearing one name and the year. For example: "THIS STONE LAID BY RAYMOND MONTAGUE BURTON 1937". The children were quite young when these stones were laid. Stanley Howard was born in 1914 [9] and laid a stone for the Nottingham Beastmarket Hill store in 1924. At least four stores bear stones laid by Montague's wife "Lady Burton", and a number in the mid to late 1930s were laid by Austin Stephen Burton who may have been a grandchild.[10]

Whilst some of these Burton buildings have been destroyed over the years, many are still standing and some of them still have active snooker clubs upstairs. Some are still occupied by Burton stores (often a combined Burton and Dorothy Perkins store) but many have changed use. McDonald's first three restaurants in the UK were opened in former Burton stores in 1974 and 1975 as the company was selling property at that time.[11]

Most of the Scottish stores are listed with Historic Environment Scotland, protecting them from changes. However, only six stores in England and Wales are listed buildings, leaving over 200 with no protection from future changes or demolition. Recent years have seen stores demolished in Plymouth (2004)[12] and Neasden (2012).[13]

Each with an unidentified, probably Welsh and now lost, coat of arms, the impalement is either Heaton or Eaton of Plas Heaton in Co. Denbigh. The motto reads ‘GWNA DDA YN DY GENEDI’. One candlestick has a plaque to the reverse which is inscribed: ‘Model of the Chimney / at the / Archdeacon’s House, / at Bangor / see Shakespeare Henry 4th Act 3rd’; the second candlestick has a blank plaque.

Although Shakespeare gives no location for the action in Act III, Scene I of Henry IV, according to Holinshed’s ‘Chronicles’ (1577), a meeting between Hotspur and Glendower did take place at the Archdeacon’s House at Bangor (see W.G. Boswell-Stone, Shakespeare’s Holinshed (London, 1907), p.137). The present, twentieth-century Archdeacon’s house is in a different location to its predecessor, but a chimney from the old Tudor house has been reused on a later building, constructed on the original site. This surviving element has the same form as the present candlesticks.

The Cathedral at Bangor is thought to be the oldest in Britain to remain in continuous use for religious purposes. Built in the twelfth century, in 1402 it was severely damaged by Owen Glendower’s followers. It was not until the sixteenth century that it was largely rebuilt and again, following a lengthy period of neglect, the Cathedral was extensively restored from 1868 by Sir Gilbert Scott (1811-78)."

This must be the Housing Survey that was carried out by the COPEC Housing Group before they built the houses in Seiriol Road. You need to read the excellent article by Rose Pipes, 'Seiriol Road, Bangor: Herbert North's Model Housing, 1927' in Transactions of Caernarvonshire Historical Society, Vol 72 (2011). Also Peter Ellis Jones's book 'Bangor 1883-1993' concentrating on pp.152- 154.

It seems that the records of the Bangor committee of COPEC are quite sparse, but if you're lucky, you might find something about the survey in the papers of Miss Mary Rathbone at BU Archives. As the COPEC group carried out the survey on behalf of the Council, it might be worth looking in the Bangor Borough Council Records at Caernarfon Record Office. It might be listed in the Catalogue, but if not, look in the Council Minutes for 1926/5.

Would anyone by chance have a copy of this comprehensive report ?

I have come across just one page of it with an exceptional description of the poor housing in various parts of the city. This report was no doubt part of the 1930's clearance scheme of the "workers housing" ( sic) which the Council then put into action.

I am trying here before I trundle off back to the Archive Library at the Uni.

Many thanks for any assistance.
